The Ice Age Trail segment that the Marquette County Chapter tends to is not only beautiful but also exceptionally rich in history. The John Muir Memorial Park Segment winds through the land of John Muir’s boyhood home. Muir was founder of the Sierra Club and is often called "The Father of Our National Parks".
Fountain (Ennis) Lake and the surrounding prairies, meadows and woodlands of the inspired a young John Muir to gain an appreciation and respect for nature. If you were to gaze toward the north shore of Fountain (Ennis) Lake on a summer day in 1849 you might have seen an 11 year old boy jumping barefoot through a boggy, green meadow calling out in a Scottish brogue that he had found a snapping turtle or frog.
Chapter volunteers have created a Muir Park guide to help you enjoy your hike here.
For more information on chapter activities and/or hiking the Ice Age Trail in this region, contact the volunteer chapter coordinator.
